Oxfam Get-together Campaign

So today was a very exciting day for me, I spent it in a room filled with beautiful women (and one male sex addict). I was at a jumble sale, in a church in Kings Cross, parting with my cash to help raise money and celebrate International Women’s Day (coming up on the 8th March).

So who were these women I hear you ask, well the ‘creators’ were Dawn Porter and Gemma Cairney. They managed to get donations from the likes of Fearne Cotton, Jimmy Carr, Lauren Laverne and Claudia Winkleman. What was equally impressive were the celebrities who showed up to run their own ‘stalls’, Kate Nash, Cherry Healey and Grace Woodward. Dawn and Gemma each had their own section and Dawn’s finance, (now a Hollywood star) Chris O’Dowd came down to show his woman some support. Oh and the cakes, my God there were so many cakes! I actually had to back away and distract myself or I would have ransacked the lot. There was also a very friendly man from Bleach London who was colourfully spraying stencils into people’s hair (I refrained from this as he was too close to the cake stand and I didn’t trust myself).

I was lucky to get in early and have a sneak preview thanks to Amy who runs Sink The Pink club nights with her partner in crime Glyn. They were also selling goodies ranging from old school CD’s to ridiculously cheap accessories. There were so many clothes and shoes it was enough to rival Carrie Bradshaw‘s wardrobe. Beautiful vintage and designer pieces going for as little as £8!!!! Absolute bargains. I was walking around in a daze for about twenty minutes, not quite believing what I was seeing. I’m glad I was able to take my pictures when I did, because as soon as those doors opened it was carnage. At one point I was actually stuck between two girls arguing over who should have the royal blue jumpsuit donated by Lauren Laverne, it was the most awkward moment I’ve had for a long time.

As I mentioned earlier there was a sex addict thrown in amongst these hoards of women. I know this because he did actually advertise the fact on a BBC Three documentary a couple of months ago. Yes it was the one and only comedian Jeff Leach, all 6ft plus of him in his black wife-beater covered in tattoos. I have to admit he was looking pretty attractive (it was painfully obvious I thought this when asking for a picture of him, I giggled like a schoolgirl, two awkward moments in the space of an hour!). He was selling his body lots of books and other random bits.

Cherry Healey’s table had to be my favourite shopping point, not only is she extremely beautiful and friendly, she was wearing the most amazing biker jacket and red striped shirt. She also had a ridiculously sexy pair of shoes that my unfortunate large feet just wouldn’t fit into.

So as I mentioned this was all in aid of International Women’s Day as there are 1.3 billion people living in poverty worldwide – more than two-thirds of them are women and girls. Events like this jumble sale raise vital funds to support women around the world. Oxfam are asking women to hold their own get-together events on or around International Women’s Day (remember March 8). As Tesco say, every little helps.

I’m unsure yet how much was raised, but by the looks of the 250 people waiting outside when I left, I have a feeling it’s going to be a pretty sizeable amount.

The crowd after only 10 minutes of the doors opening, it got much busier than this.

I am going to post about other shows from Milan but I was so impressed by Versace this season, I thought it deserved one all to itself. I absolutely love anything that has a Gothic element, and Donatella showed this in full force. The crucifixes, studded leather, alarmingly tight looking coat-dresses and chain mail (first seen on the Versace runway back in1982), were all on the catwalk. The coats were especially beautiful with flashes of jewel toned colours or all black with appliquéd crucifixes. I’d quite happily rock up to Tesco in any of them, although if I could afford one, I’d more likely be shopping in Waitrose. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rooney Mara decided to wear something from this collection to the Oscars.
